Does Insurance Cover Sewer Backup in Ontario?

Quick answer

Sewer backup is usually an optional endorsement in Ontario — not automatic with sudden-pipe coverage. Overland flood is a third, often optional, wording. After a GTA storm backup, ask your broker specifically about the sewer-backup rider and its limit. Photo first, then extract; do not wait days for an adjuster while contaminated water sits in the slab.

After a heavy rain in Toronto, Vaughan, or Markham, the most common claim surprise is a missing sewer-backup endorsement. “I have water coverage” does not always mean floor-drain overflow is covered.

After a sewer backup

  1. Do not stand in the water if power may be live — hydro or an electrician first.
  2. Stop using toilets and sinks so you do not push more volume into the basement.
  3. Call 311 in Toronto if the public sewer may be involved.
  4. Photograph every wet room, then call the insurer and ask whether you have the sewer-backup rider and what the dollar limit is.
  5. Treat the water as contaminated (Category 3). Carpet pad, wet drywall paper, and insulation are often removed rather than “dried and kept.”

Choosing a contractor and timing

Most homeowners can pick their own restoration company. Preferred-vendor lists are common; mandatory use of the insurer’s contractor is not the usual rule in Ontario — confirm with your broker. Policies also expect you to take reasonable steps to prevent further damage. That means photograph, then extract. Waiting several days “until the adjuster walks the job” while sewage sits in a finished basement drives secondary damage and mould risk.

What Guardian does

We contain, extract, remove what cannot be sanitized, set drying equipment, and build a documented file. A household shop-vac is not a sewer-backup response. If the policy lacks the rider, we can still mitigate — you will know the coverage conversation earlier, before reconstruction starts.

Common questions

Does insurance cover sewer backup in Ontario?

Only if you purchased sewer-backup coverage. It is usually an optional endorsement with its own limit, not part of basic sudden-water coverage. Confirm the rider and limit with your broker.

What is the difference between sewer backup, a burst pipe, and overland flood?

A burst supply pipe is sudden accidental water from plumbing and is often on the base policy. Sewer backup is wastewater or storm water rising through drains — usually optional. Overland flood is surface water entering from outside the home — also often optional or limited. Do not assume “water coverage” means all three.

What should I do after a sewer backup in a Toronto basement?

Stay out if power is at risk. Stop using drains. Call 311 if the public sewer may be involved. Photograph, then call your insurer and ask about the sewer-backup rider. Call restoration and treat the water as contaminated (Category 3). Do not wait days for an adjuster before extraction.

Can I choose my own restoration company after a sewer backup?

In most Ontario home claims you can choose your own contractor. Insurers may suggest preferred vendors; you are not usually required to use them. Mitigate promptly, document, and keep your broker in the loop.
